For Animal Lovers

Do you gush over four-legged, furry friends? Do you stop mid-sentence to admire a bird that’s flown by? Do you talk to a horse as though it will talk back? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then our Animal Lovers full-day itinerary is for you!

Activity #1 – Mission: Wolf

Mission: Wolf is a peaceful sanctuary for captive wolves and wolf-dog crosses in the mountains of Huerfano County.

The more than 30 wolves and wolf-dog crosses living at Mission: Wolf all have one thing in common—they were born in a cage. At Mission: Wolf, these animals are given a second chance at a happy life while also acting as ambassadors for the quarter of a million wolves currently in captivity.

LUNCH: Gub Gubs Pizza located inside of the Walsenburg Mercantile

Activity #2 – Horseback Riding with Yellow Pine Ranch

This historic Yellow Pine Ranch located above 8,500 feet elevation offers horseback trail rides. The trail rides provide a relaxing tour of pastures, streams, and the San Isabel National Forest. Horseback rides are available during the summer months to adults and children seven years and up.

DINNER: The Timbers Restaurant is now closed. I would update to say the Dog Bar & Grill in Cuchara since it is an article about Animal Lovers

Activity #3 – Watch for Birds on the Spanish Peaks Birding Trail

See birds and more on The Spanish Peaks Birding Trail, which follows the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway for much of its length. This trail nearly runs the gamut of Colorado habitats. It includes landscapes as diverse as the rimrock canyons etched into the plains east of Walsenburg and the arid pinon-juniper woods and riparian cottonwoods of Lathrop State Park.
