Explore a Land Rich in History, Natural Wonders and Art
There is a mystique about the Spanish Peaks. These stunning twin peaks were thought to be the Breasts of the Earth, creating the clouds and rain. They have long served as navigational landmarks for all who pass within sight of them. This part of Colorado surprises people because its diversity is unparalleled and unspoiled.
WALSENBURG is the city that was built on coal and you will find evidence of that proud history nearly anywhere you look. It is also “The Gateway to Spanish Peaks Country.” The small settlement of GARDNER was a mecca for the many that were seeking the counter culture in the 60’s and 70’s. Many have stayed and continued to practice a simpler, sustainable lifestyle.
Tucked into the shadows of the Spanish Peaks, LA VETA loves to celebrate its artistic inspiration with both performing and visual cultural events. Take the Scenic Highway of Legends to CUCHARA, and feel the magic of this mountain village that oozes old west charm and is described as the absolute essence of Colorado.
Among the unique features of the Spanish Peaks are the great dikes which radiate out from the mountains like spokes of a wheel. These walls of rock are up to 200 feet high and 17 miles long. Nearly 400 separate dikes have been identified by geologists, who continue to study them.
You have mountains to conquer, lakes and streams to fish, eagles to photograph, meadows to meander and trails to hike. Come see natural and scenic wonders that will take your breath away.
