Celebrate the Season in Spanish Peaks Country

Your Guide to Holiday Festivities, Mountain Traditions, and Winter Fun

The holidays are just around the corner, and Spanish Peaks Country is already sparkling with seasonal magic. From small-town celebrations to timeless mountain traditions, there’s no better place to feel the spirit of the season.

La Veta Holiday Fest Returns December 5

Mark your calendars—Friday, December 5 is the La Veta Merchants’ 2nd Annual Holiday Fest, when downtown La Veta transforms into a festive wonderland filled with lights, music, shopping, and community cheer.

One of the evening’s most beloved traditions is back: the Jingle & Strut Holiday Costume Parade & Contest. Dust off your best (or most outrageous) holiday attire, from classic ugly sweaters to full reindeer onesies, and join the procession down Main Street.

Event Highlights

  • Shop local and stay late, with stores open until 8 PM
  • Meet Santa from 4–6 PM
  • Enjoy a tree lighting, caroling, and holiday treats
  • Explore in-store specials and prize drawings

It’s the perfect night to gather your friends, bring the whole family, and kick off the season in true Spanish Peaks style.

Cut Your Own Christmas Tree in the San Isabel National Forest

One of the most memorable mountain traditions is cutting your own Christmas tree in the San Isabel National Forest. After a day of sledding or snowshoeing around Cuchara, head into the forest and bring home a piece of Colorado for the holidays.

  • Permits are $10 per tree
  • Available at local Ranger Stations or online through December 31
  • Most forested areas near La Veta and Cuchara are open for cutting
  • No quota, so you can take your time to find the perfect tree

Tree-Cutting Tips

  • Bring a hand saw (chainsaws are not allowed)
  • Dress warmly and plan for winter weather
  • Follow all Forest Service guidelines
  • Pack out everything you bring in

This simple, time-honored tradition is a beautiful way to welcome the season and create lasting family memories.

Marketplace of Ideas & Made in Walsenburg Market Days

December 6, 2025 • 10 AM–4 PM • Museum of Friends, Walsenburg

Celebrate the season at the annual Marketplace of Ideas & Made in Walsenburg Market Days, a festive holiday event that brings together local artists, makers, and small businesses under one creative roof.

Held at the Museum of Friends, this one-day market is the perfect place to find meaningful handmade gifts—from artwork and jewelry to home décor and holiday treasures—while supporting the creative community of Spanish Peaks Country.

Families can enjoy a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus with volunteers on hand to email photos as a free keepsake. Shoppers are welcome to warm up with complimentary hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies as they explore the market.

Winter Solstice Bell Ringing on December 21

On December 21, gather with neighbors and visitors for one of Spanish Peaks Country’s most cherished winter traditions: the Winter Solstice Bell Ringing.

As the sun sets on the longest night of the year, locals walk through town in a candlelit procession, ringing bells and offering good wishes for peace, light, and harmony. Wear your favorite vintage winter outfit, bundle up, and help welcome the return of longer days.

This heartfelt, community-centered moment captures the essence of winter in the Spanish Peaks region.

Winter Adventures at Cuchara Mountain Park

Winter fun awaits at Cuchara Mountain Park, a beloved high-country playground offering sledding, snowshoeing, winter hiking, and scenic views. The community is eagerly anticipating the projected mid-December opening of the 2025–26 ski season (date to be announced), with hopes of the historic chairlift running once again.

After your time on the mountain, warm up in Cuchara village. Many local businesses operate Wednesday through Sunday from 11 AM to 8 PM, and The Timbers Restaurant & Tavern offers winter hours:

  • Fridays: 5–8 PM
  • Saturdays: 5–9 PM
  • Sundays: 9 AM–5 PM

Please Note: Cuchara Mountain Park is a high-altitude, unsupervised adventure zone. Come prepared for winter weather, stay aware of mountain conditions, and recreate responsibly.
