Meet Greenhorn Mountain
If your idea of a good hike doesn’t involve dodging selfie sticks or waiting in line for a summit shot, we’ve got a trail for you. Say hello to Greenhorn Mountain. It’s not trending. It’s not packed. It’s not bragging. But it should be. Tucked away in the northern reaches of Spanish Peaks Country, Greenhorn Mountain gives you five distinct ecosystems in one go—from prairie grasslands that hum with meadowlarks to wind-whipped alpine tundra that makes you feel like you’ve earned your solitude. With just 11 miles of trails up north and rugged wilderness to the south, it’s not just a hike—it’s an escape plan.

Summer Events
- What’s better than a fireworks show? A fireworks show by a lake, with the Spanish Peaks standing proud in the background like nature’s version of a mic drop. Join us on July 4 at 9:30 PM at Lathrop State Park, Colorado’s first state park (and frankly, still one of the best). Grab a picnic basket, a blanket, and get ready to enjoy the show.
- Art in the Park returns to La Veta Town Park in early July, with handmade treasures, local flavors, and laid-back vibes under the shade trees. From paintings and pottery to live music and food trucks, it’s a true celebration of creativity in the heart of the mountains—and admission is free.
- That rumble you hear? It’s the Race Across America, a coast-to-coast test of willpower, sweat, and serious quads. In mid June, La Veta Pines RV Park is one of the official aid stations. That means elite cyclists, epic stories, and a lot of reasons to hang around and cheer wildly.
- Rev those engines and polish that chrome, in mid July, the annual Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show returns.
